Maximizing Your Books Earning Potential

Everything in life is worth writing about if you have the guts to do it and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.
- Sylvia Plath

If you're going to put out tons of effort writing a book, you should also invest the extra time and energy into creating some strategic components that can really help leverage your promotional options. Building marketing into your book is one way to help maximize your book's earning potential. If done correctly, you could shave hundreds, if not thousands of dollars off of your marketing and publicity budget.
So, how do you get started? Well, its easier than you might think. First you'll want to do a little brainstorming and really begin to focus on your reader. A good analysis of who will be reading your book will help you determine which components need to be included in this book to enhance its marketability. Through this, you can add those things you might have not otherwise considered. Lets say, for example, you are writing a book on relationships or great places to meet your significant other. You might decide to include those places to assist your readers in their search and in so doing have now opened the door to the possibility of offering this book to those sites or singles programs. When it works for your topic, incorporating companies, websites, or other helpful resources is a great way to extend the growth of your book beyond the initial reader, turning it into a "one-stop-shop" and thereby enhancing your marketing avenues. If you're a fiction writer, consider the setting for your book and if possible, why not set it in a real place? This could potentially lead to signings and events where the book is set.
Does your book have a handy resource guide? If it doesn't you should consider adding one. Then you can also offer this same resource guide (and the updates) on your website as well. From this, you can also consider offering special reports that readers can subscribe to; or even a newsletter or mailing list with periodic updates works well. The key here is: you don't want your relationship to end after the reader puts the book down. You want to continue to stay on their radar screen as long as you can.

As you begin to focus on your reader, take a moment to consider what they'd really love to see in your book as opposed to what you'd like to see in it. There is a big difference. When I was putting together my most recent book: From Book to Bestseller (due out this fall), I realized that timelines and check-off lists were big deals to my readers, so I incorporated them. These lists now can also be offered on my website as a downloadable product.
In an ideal marketing world, your book should be its own marketing machine, offering not only the potential for spin-off products (as discussed in our last issue) but also a means to market, market, market and maximize its earning potential. Ideally, you want to capitalize on your book for as long as you can, and turning it into a marketing machine will go a long way toward extending the life and reach of your book, increasing your bottom line and getting you that Chateau in France you always dreamed of.

My 30 month old went to the circus right before we went to Disney World, She loves this tape and sings like a little diva to it. I only wish it ran an hour instead of 30 min!

Customer Review: MY 3 YEAR OLD LOVES THESE MOVIES

SHE JUST ADORES MICKEY AND MINNIE AND ALL THE GANG, WE HAVE ALL OF THEM AND I HOPE THEY LAST FOREVER, I EVEN ENJOY THEM ONCE IN A WHILE (NOT ALL DAY LIKE HER). SING-A-LONG IN DISNEY LAND IS THE BEST FOR VACTIONERS. HOPE YOU ENJOY......

Flurry Blue UB Funkeys Funkiki Island by Radica

Flurry Blue UB Funkeys Funkiki Island by Radica
The Flurry are very cool under pressure making them the shrewdest negotiators in Terrapinia. It is said they literally have ice water flowing thru their veins. They are legendary for their ability to sell anything to anyone.

Customer Review: Kids like it

Bought for my children and they seem to like it. To me, like everything else, I think it is a money pit! They want you to buy all these different characters for the same game. As far as quality it is good, my daughter was slamming it on the desk and it still worked. It was delivered in a timely manner also.

Moon Shoes - Purple

Moon Shoes - Purple
Moon shoes are the original mini trampolines made for feet so kids can jump with anti-gravity effects. Plus, they help to develop balance and coordination. The wacky Moon Shoes are made of quality, high-density plastic, adjustable nylon straps with sure-footing and nonskid treads. They fit up to size 9 men's shoes and hold a maximum total weight of 180 pounds.

Customer Review: My kids love these shoes!

My girls are 5 and 7 years old and they think these shoes are so much fun! I like the fact that they are getting exercise while they are having a ball! The foot is suspended by big rubber bands that give a good bounce. They haven't broken any rubber bands yet. I don't know how long they will last, but I'm glad I bought them.

Customer Review: Moon sheos killed my inner child

I received these as a joke gift from a close friend of mine. I was pretty stoked upon unwrapping the paper and seeing such a silly gift. I still havent managed to get them together. The box claims the shoes will support up to 160 lbs. I weigh about 95.. The instructions say to put one rubber band per slot for under 60lbs and 2 for 60-100, 3 for 100-130lbs etc. I figured I should put three just to be safe. Well stretching three rubber bands is near impossible even if you do them one at a time. As this toy is mean for young children who don't weigh close to 100lbs it should be great. However, if your child weighs more than 60lbs I'd run away from this product as quickly as possible. This toy should really say that it will support up to 160lbs b/c clearly the assembly for such weight is near impossible. Great for tiny kids not great for gag gifts...

Customer Review: So sad for Marvel !!!!

Wow, what an amazing gift. This collection rocks, sadly I heard Marvel dropped the contract with the Git Corp. They want to rent out their comics now I guess. What A wasted effort, I heard there is a water mark if you try to print it. That's cool, but come on Marvel loosen up! Your giving adults and children a gift. Young children will be reading and collecting just to smell those pages!

I read Daredevil and Thor was cancelled for a 2008 release. Well I'm sorry but I'm not going to pay a yearly subscription(to Marvel) just to read my favorite comics.

No Country for Old Men (Vintage International)

No Country for Old Men (Vintage International)
In No Country for Old Men, Cormac McCarthy simultaneously strips down the American crime novel and broadens its concerns to encompass themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this morning’s headlines.

Customer Review: starts with a bang ends with a whimper

I'm not sure if I have ever read a book that had such an amazing start and that then became so bad. It went from 4 stars to 2. One of the main problems is that about three-fourths of the way through the novel there was a major turning point and from that point on the novel was so boring that I almost quit reading it. Perhaps McCarthy was trying to do something unique with the non-traditional story structure but it didn't work for me. I felt like the story was done 100 pages before it actually ended. I'm surprised to hear myself saying this but skip the book and see the movie instead.

Customer Review: No Reason to Read this Old Book

As a regional writer("Esther's Race", Cloquet River Press, 2007;ISBN 97809792175001), I am always willing to learn from a master. So when all the accolades came down from on high about Mr. McCarthy's brilliant prose, I had to pick up something he'd written and give it a go. So I trundled off to my local indie bookstore and bought a copy of "No Country", thinking that I was going to be in for a treat. Wrong, wrong, wrong. What I got was a book long on senseless violence and sociopathic brooding with none of the poinancy of say, "Silence of the Lambs." The story moves along as if the ultimate goal is to dishearten and disgust, not tantalize and excite. I for one can get plenty depressed and morose for a lot less money--by reading the daily newspaper--rather than wasting days and dollars on a novel that would have been rejected by any publisher but for the author's name attached to it. To be fair, I didn't want my first and only exposure to McCarthy's writing to be based upon this piece of tripe so I did the unthinkable and went back to the same bookstore and bought a copy of "The Road." Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is a fine novel. Written in starkness and with all the bleak shades of gray that McCarthy should have used in "Old Men" (where the only color of the rainbow is black) had he seen fit to write something worthy of posterity. "The Road" is everything that "Old Men" isn't: beautifully written, gloriously themed and supremely plotted. "The Road" is like the best of Neil Young's music--stark, mystical yet heartfelt. In comparison,"Old Men" reads like purposeless heavy metal noise.

Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Light - Black

Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Light - Black
Customer Review: Works Perfectly (almost)

If you want a night light for your Kindle, this is the one. Has two settings, and works just fine. Why 4 instead of 5? Because it doesn't work directly on the Kindle and unless you've added Velcro to the back of the Kindle to hold it in it's holder it doesn't work very well there either. But with the little extra space the Velcro adds, it works just fine.

Customer Review: Perfect light for avid readers

Finally--a light to chase away shadows cast by poor lighting plans in hotel rooms, badly placed light in airplanes, and a large personal TVs blocking light on exercycles.

So far, this handly little companion has willingly clasped on everywhere I've put it and the flexible neck permits any variety of light placements. So great I've already given one to my husband and will probably use a bunch of them as gifts throughout the year.
