Article Writing: Your Personal Library of Books

We write and we write well. At least we hope that we do. Still, we writers need our own library of "go to" books to help us write with strength, market our wares, and simply to inspire us to greater works. I've compiled a brief list of useful books for the serious article writer's library. Some I own, while others I plan on buying.

The Chicago School of Style, 15th Edition - Considered by English speaking authors as "the Bible" of proper grammar usage and style, this 950 plus page reference book is everything you need to have on hand when you simply are not sure about punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc. Surprisingly, the book is not stuffy as it allows serious writers some flexibility with the rules. If you have been writing for some time, you know that rules do change. I was shocked when even the Chicago School started a sentence with "and" in it. Oh me, oh my!

Guerilla Marketing For Writers -- I am very curious about this title as I have seen reference to it on various writers' web sites. Essentially "Guerilla Marketing" espouses the need for writers [particularly book authors] to spend as much as 33% of their time marketing. Hmmm...writing in and of itself is so involved. Who has the time?

Writer's Market -- Every year since this reference book was first issued in 1921, the Writer's Market has served writers in finding places where they can submit their work for payment. The book lists contact information, submission guidelines, and tips on all the who/what/when/where/why of the "word" industry.

Random House Webster's Pocket Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation Guide Okay, I admit it. When I don't feel like lugging the "Chicago Style" around, this Random House book meets most of my needs. 300 power packed pages that will easily fit in your laptop carrying case, purse, or suit jacket pocket.

No, I rarely use a dictionary anymore nor do I rely on a thesaurus. Everything I need is right online or part of my Word program. I don't know about you, but I am definitely a 21st century writer who manages to write, edit, rewrite, submit and accomplish a multitude of related tasks from the ease of my laptop computer. No pencil and paper for me, except when lounging by the river or down at the beach. Oh, for more of those types of experiences!

CR Gibson Zoophabet Loose-Leaf Memory Book

CR Gibson Zoophabet Loose-Leaf Memory Book
Customer Review: Absolutely love it!!

I bought this baby book for our third child and loved it so much I purchased it again for our fourth child. The pages are so cute(with the alphabet theme) and each page is so informative from the maternal and paternal family history to the pregnancy info. to the birth and various milestones to the first 5 birthdays and other special occasions. I especially love the fact that is a loose-leaf book so other pages can be added for pictures and other keepsake items.

Customer Review: Very Organized

My baby is only two weeks old so I haven't used the book to much yet but it's going to be a nice way to keep track of major milestones. It's very organized and a good reminder of what to be looking for as far as developmental progress. I like the fact that it has pages to fill out up to age 5 and that you can add your own pages.

Design
With a total weight of 5.1 ounces and slim measurements of 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.87 inches (WxHxD), the nüvi 350 is just right for the pocket or purse. A bright, 64,000-color display dominates the front of the device and a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels means that there's plenty of room for displaying map data and other elements of the device's interface. An SD memory card slot is provided for expansion software, such as a points of interest database, media files and electronic guides (see below). The flip-up antenna includes an MCX-type connector for connecting the unit to an external GPS antenna. Meanwhile, a powerful built-in speaker resides on the back of device. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you for to eight hours of battery life, depending on use. In addition to an AC charger, the unit also ships with a 12-volt power adapter for vehicle charging, as well as a windshield suction cup mount.

Fortunately, Garmin has made it easy to interface with the nüvi 350's 700 megabytes of onboard memory, thanks to "plug-and-play" USB mass storage support. Just plug the device into your computer's USB port and you've got instantaneous access to all the audio books, music, photos, supplemental maps and other data on the nüvi 350's internal and SD card memory.

Navigation
The nüvi 350 is first and foremost a personal GPS device. Wherever you go -- in your car or on foot-- the device offers extremely accurate position data, thanks to a high-sensitivity integrated GPS receiver by SiRF and WAAS-enabled, 12-satellite reception. Combined with detailed maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico the nüvi 350 provides automatic routing, turn-by-turn voice directions, and touchscreen control-- making it easy to find your way anywhere. Plus, the unique "text-to-speech" feature calls out turns by street name, and you can choose from either 2D or 3D mapping perspectives when you're viewing your route on the display. Additionally, the nüvi 350 is compatible with Garmin's GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver*, which allows users to avoid traffic tie-ups by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route.

As mentioned, the nüvi 350 comes packed with mapping data for North America, but you can can also load up your custom points of interest. Set up proximity alerts for school zones, safety cameras, and more using Garmin's free POI (points of interest) loader program (available from garmin.com).

Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store.

The device automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way.
Tools for the Journey
Navigation is just part of the journey, and the nüvi 350 is one of the first devices to recognize that. The built-in "Travel Kit" offers an MP3 player, an audio book player from Audible.com, a jpeg-format picture viewer, a world travel clock with time zones, a currency converter, a measurement converter, and a calculator.

In addition to the included travel tools, additional software add-ons are available, such as the Garmin Language Guide, with data provided by Oxford University Press. This software suite contains a multilingual word bank, phrase bank, and five bilingual dictionaries. The multilingual word bank and phrase bank supports nine languages and dialects, including American English, British English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, European Spanish, and Latin American Spanish. Now you can look up and translate more than 17,000 words or 20,000 phrases per language -- right in the palm of your hand. Through the unit's text-to-speech interface, users can get a spoken pronunciation of each entry in the word bank, along with gender and part of speech information.

Another useful add-on software package, the Garmin Travel Guide, is loaded with information provided by Marco Polo. These guides put in-depth travel information such as reviews and recommendations for restaurants, tourist attractions, and more at your fingertips. The software allows you to navigate to an address or search points of interest-- places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. The nüvi 350 automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way. The unit also audibly announces the name of upcoming streets-- letting you keep your eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. And if you stray off course, the nüvi 350 automatically calculates the quickest way to get back on track.

*Traffic services available only in select cities where RDS-TMC coverage exists. Requires the GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver and subscription fee to enable traffic capability.

Some Like It Hot (1959)

Some Like It Hot (1959)
When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they quickly board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the twonewestand homeliestmembers of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect...until a lovelorn singer (Marilyn Monroe) falls for Josephine, an ancient playboy (Joe E. Brown) falls for Daphne, and a mob boss (George Raft) refuses to fall for their hoax! Nominated* for 6 Academy Awards(r), Some Like It Hot is the quintessential madcap farce and one of the greatest of all film comedies (The Motion Picture Guide). *1959: Director, Actor (Lemmon), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography (B&W), Art Direction (B&W), Costume Design (B&W, winner)

Customer Review: Some Like It Hot

ESSENTIAL MOVIE!!! Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon & Marilyn Monroe star in this 1959 comedy which will make even the most serious of people laugh. Nominated for seven Oscars & winner of one (B & W Costume Design), Some Like It Hot entertains from beginning to end. The story takes place in Chicago during the Depression; Curtis (saxophone) & Lemmon (bass) are musicians that aren't doing well. They witness the infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre & they're seen by the murderers, Lemmon's bass fiddle takes a few shots. Of course, they decide to run. They can't get a gig until they find out about an all-girl band that's heading for Miami & is short the same instruments they play. Marilyn Monroe is in the band & the comedy is only now warming up.

Curtis & Lemmon dress in drag in order to join the band because no men are allowed. Monroe likes to drink & Curtis & Lemmon are more than willing to aid & abet her. Curtis, teh playboy, wants to develop a relationship with Monroe so he takes on the persona of a rich bachelor. The farcical irony of this stems from the fact that Lemmon (in drag & makeup) has gotten an older, rich bachelor to fall for her(him). The part of the rich bachelor is played by Joe E. Brown. Curtis appropriates his clothes & yacht in order to pursue & woo Monroe.

It's a good thing that this movie was filmed in black & white. The makeup used on the two male leads appears to be garish even in this medium. The use of color film would have made this much too apparent.

George Raft, famous for his gangster role twenty years earlier, makes a featured appearance as the gangster who orchestrated the hit & who's now looking for the runaway musicians. And, of course, he ends up in Miami when the mob has their annual get together there. The ending is fast & furious with laughs abounding, not much is subtle here. The ending is a classic when Joe E. Brown proposes to Jack Lemmon's female personna. Lemmon makes every excuse possible why he/she can't marry him. Finally, Lemmon confesses he's a man & Brown's reply is hilarious. You must see it to believe it.

Customer Review: OUTRAGEOUS AND SOPHISTICATED - One of the Best Comedies Ever

"Outrageous" is the best word I can think of to describe Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot - unless it's "sophisticated." Some may think that a strange combination, but I don't think so. We have the burlesque element of two musicians - played by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon - who are driven by lack of work to impersonate females so they can get jobs in an all-girl band that's heading to Florida. (One of the musicians, Curtis, also impersonates Cary Grant later in the film - not for work but love.) We have gangland, prohibition and the Chicago St. Valentine's Day Massacre, featuring George Raft as a gangster and Pat O'Brien as a police detective. (This is another reason our two musicians need to be incognito and heading out of town - they accidentally witnessed that holiday massacre.) We have the lush, tropical setting to which our heroes (heroines?) are fleeing: an exclusive Florida resort for retired millionaires. We have the gorgeously seductive Marilyn Monroe as the singer of the band in one of her hottest roles, not to mention her rendition of a pair of really hot songs. And we have one of the homliest comedians that ever graced the silver screen - Joe E. Brown - as the millionaire that takes a liking to Lemmon's female persona. It is definitely a combination of the outrageous and the sophisticated.

In order to pursue Monroe, Curtis doffs his wig and female padding and dons a blue blazer and captain's cap, a la Cary Grant; but he also blackmails Lemmon into keeping Brown occupied on shore so that he and Monroe can take advantage of the millionaire's yacht. In one of the great, classic scenes of cinema, we cut between Curtis and Monroe making love on the yacht, and Lemmon and Brown dancing at an outdoor restaurant. Curtis convinces Monroe that he has become frigid because of a lost love, so she decides to try to cure him. Cut to Lemmon and Brown dancing a tango to the same tune Billy Wilder used in Sunset Boulevard for the New Year's Eve party. Cut back to Curtis and Monroe kissing - he's starting to thaw. Cut to Lemmon and Brown dancing - they exchange a long stem carnation between their teeth. Back to Curtis and Monroe - his glasses are becoming fogged. Lemmon and Brown - they've blindfolded the orchestra!

When the two red-hot lovers meet back at their room, Lemmon tells Curtis that he's engaged. "Who's the lucky girl," Curtis asks. "I am," Lemmon coos, as he plays the shakers he's brought back from the restaurant. Curtis is stunned: he's done such a good job convincing his friend that he's a girl, Lemmon's ready to pick out china. Now he has to try to undo it, but it's not going to be easy - the deluded Lemmon is thinking about the alimony checks he'll collect if the marriage doesn't work out. It's all a lot of really outrageous - and sophisticated - fun.

Some Like It Hot was a high point in the careers of its three stars, as well as its director. Curtis and Lemmon would pair up again in The Great Race (1965), a wonderful Blake Edwards slapstick spoof, and make many more films as well - but this was one of their best. Monroe, on the other hand, appeared in only three more films before her death at the age of 36 in 1962 - so this was definitely the high point of her career. Billy Wilder would make about a dozen more films; but since this was his best comedy, it was a high point for him, too. Some Like It Hot was nominated for six Oscars, but only won Best Costume Design for a Black-and-White film, because it was competing against Ben-Hur, which swept the Oscars that year.

Change of Heart: A Novel

Change of Heart: A Novel

The acclaimed #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a spellbinding tale of a mother's tragic loss and one man's last chance at gaining salvation.

Can we save ourselves, or do we rely on others to do it? Is what we believe always the truth?

One moment June Nealon was happily looking forward to years full of laughter and adventure with her family, and the next, she was staring into a future that was as empty as her heart. Now her life is a waiting game. Waiting for time to heal her wounds, waiting for justice. In short, waiting for a miracle to happen.

For Shay Bourne, life holds no more surprises. The world has given him nothing, and he has nothing to offer the world. In a heartbeat, though, something happens that changes everything for him. Now, he has one last chance for salvation, and it lies with June's eleven-year-old daughter, Claire. But between Shay and Claire stretches an ocean of bitter regrets, past crimes, and the rage of a mother who has lost her child.

Would you give up your vengeance against someone you hate if it meant saving someone you love? Would you want your dreams to come true if it meant granting your enemy's dying wish?

Once again, Jodi Picoult mesmerizes and enthralls readers with this story of redemption, justice, and love.

Customer Review: I may be the one with 'A Change of Heart' ...

Eagerly anticipating Picoult's latest work, I read the excerpt online and couldn't wait to sink my teeth into what I thought would be her latest masterpiece. After my disappointment with The Tenth Circle, tepid interest in Nineteen Minutes, and sheer love affair with The Pact, imagine my surprise when I was met with a prescribed plot without any of her stylistic twists. What My Sister's Keeper offered, this novel lacked. A cross between The Green Mile and The DaVinci Code, Picoult's work fell way short, and dedicated fans will be disappointed. Picoult will need to produce something miraculous with her next work, or my {literary} Heart will need to be Harvested elsewhere.

Customer Review: Tried To Be About Many Things And Ended Up Being About Very Little

I liked the last novel I read by this author (The Tenth Circle) but Change of Heart was too scattered and perhaps far-reaching to find the solidity it needed to bring off this sort of plot. The religious aspects were leaden and heavy-handed, very much simplistic when in this particular circumstance some complexity of thought was required. Also the crimes central to the story were somehow glossed over and dismissed, even as Picoult tried hard to make them all the more lurid in their destructive aftermath. The prison chapters (and some of her chapters desperately needed to be longer!) were so weak and nimbly touched upon, and so painfully unrealistic that they lacked the horror they should have provoked from within a reader. Finally the idea of miracles occurring as she described totally undermined the last shred of realism she might have clung to in this already diluted tale. I found it a weak and unsatisfying sort of book, and I wish I had never bought it or read it.

Customer Review: Love it!

Have had my Reader for about 3 months now and I really am happy with it. I have a friend who managed to get her hands on a Kindle so was able to compare the items. My Reader has a much "cleaner" design. No, you can't type on it but I wouldn't use that feature much anyway.

I DO have a problem with the Sony eBook store. I certainly hope they make it more reliable and user friendly - soon! But since these reviews are about the Reader I can truly say I am very happy with it. We travel a good deal and I don't have to decide which book I want to take along - I can "pack" lots! :D

Customer Review: Does not work with Apple Computers even if running Parallells

I had the earlier eReader 500, and it worked fine with my 2007 iMac I liked it so much I wanted to upgrade and give my old one to my daughter. Dealing with Sony was a nightmare. I was routed to a dozen foreign countries, and spent hours and HOURS with customer service, and their managers. NO RESOLVE< and nobody was able to tell me until I returned it that it won't work with my computer. After being promised free return shipping (I was to receive an email with instruction...it never came), I paid to return it to Sony. The product was fine, but I will NEVER BUY ANOTHER SONY PRODUCT.

40 Years of the X-Men

40 Years of the X-Men
With 40 Years Of X-Men DVD, you've got a full collection of every X-Men story published in the last four decades. Almost 500 issues of the classic X-Men comics are reproduced here, from the very first issue in 1963 to August 2005 -- all in full color, from cover to cover. Explore a world where a small group of people are born with genes that give them super-powers. These "mutants" are hated and feared by humanity at large, and the X-Men come together to protect both mutants and human from prejudice and evil mutants alike. You'll get to follow their incredible adventures as they span four amazing decades.

Customer Review: A perfect gift for the comic book fan who has almost everything

My husband loved this as a gift. He is a long-time comic book fan and this gave him an opportunity to read some of the very first editions that are way before his time. They look amazing on the computer, plus you can print if you want. (with 15,000+ pages I can't imagine why you'd want to) I was concerned about Mac compatibility, but since the thing is just a PDF interface, you just need Acrobat, no special Windows-only software. We're looking to pick up the Spiderman collection next.

Customer Review: Nice read

It is just as it says. A pdf scan of all comics. It's really neat to read some of these again. Great value and good entertainment.
