Is it Time to Rewrite the Holy Books? (2)
For years afterwards I pondered on what kind of religion thrives on perpetual, personal unhappiness for its gratification. What kind of godliness seeks merely to cause pain and anguish when one's time on earth is so short? What kind of worship concentrates only on the negative and nasty things of life so that confessions of sins take precedence over confessions of goodness? What kind of god prefers someone living in a hell of a marriage, or in 'sin', and depriving themselves of love and affection in preference to starting all over again with a new partner in mutual blessing and spiritual joy? What god indeed prevents females from developing themselves to the fullest, condemning them to a life of inequality? Could it be the same one found in the holy books which were written by men, for a male dominated society, to fuel the power of men, while deliberately repressing the development of women to avoid any competition, and deny them their rights to ensure the continuity of unchallenged male power and control?
The Bible is God's word, I am frequently told. But who guaranteed it to be so? How do we really know? It was truly inspired writing, that is certain, by people who felt a deep need to shout their feelings to the world - and we are told they had the benefit of God actually walking among them! But as it has mainly been based on word of mouth, no one in our age can ever say for sure. And if we live by what the Bible says to the letter, to the exclusion of all else, not only would we still be doing some pretty violent things to our fellowmen, but could we also not be missing the inspiration of our own prophets in our own age? Which age has a monopoly on a direct link to God? How do we know that new prophets and disciples are not being nurtured now? In fact, could we have stopped listening to God because we have become so enmeshed in our own arrogant web of self-sufficiency and the straitjacket of self-righteousness and outdated beliefs, we are far removed from what God might want of us?
The Bible is etched on my memory to such an extent, having been immersed in it at an impressionable stage in my life, that whole passages - beautiful ones about charity and love, and nasty ones about brimstone fire ? float about regularly. I also remember every book in the Bible since my rote learning over 40 years ago! Yet I cannot identify with it in any way. As I do love God, I am constantly plagued by what sort of god not only looks like one race of people, carefully matching each ethnic group, but only mentions those of one colour in His special book, making me, and millions like me, non-existent, especially if he is responsible for all of us, we are made in his image and likeness and he loves us all equally! What sort of god punishes the faithful while those who couldn't care less hardly seems to be punished at all?
Preserving and Maintaining Control
There is no doubt that Christian ideals are under seige, especially with the gay and women's issues, because there are too many anomalies in their execution. But that is the problem with any unchanging and inflexible religion which is created and dominated by one group or one gender in society. It reflects only their likenesses and belief, tolerating no examination or criticisms. Interpretations tend to be dogmatic, insular, being favourable only to the interpreters, in order to preserve and maintain their control of God's word. Years from my childhood, human beings are still not allowed to be fallible, to enjoy their life as given, otherwise they will be punished severely and forever. We must be perfect beings in God's sight, there being little godly love available for any defaulter.
Yet, if all God wants are people to punish, then it can't be the same God I worship. I am a very spiritual person and I have always felt close to my God, guided and blessed by Him daily in my life. Regardless of my actions I have never felt that I would be punished. As long as I am not offending anyone, I have never felt that I have sinned. Maybe this is because my God is one who values everyone, regardless of gender, or race, sexuality or attitude, strength or weakness. Being naturally superior, he does not need to punish us weaklings for using the assets and brains He gave us! In fact, I have always felt there would be forgiveness, love and patience - and not in another life either, but right here and now! I have been so loved and protected throughout my life, it is difficult to explain this to a non-believer and I have not even encouraged my children to share it. If they do not understand my feelings, they would only pay lip service to please me. They have to discover it for themselves too.
My gradual change in life pattern, emphasising how I treat my fellowmen here on earth, with respect, care and value, seems light years away from the constant guilt and hopelessness I felt as a youngster when blind acceptance of vows made when I was too young set me unquestioningly on the path of a spiritual hand-me-down, devoid of personal appreciation or meaning. Living in a manner which reflects my love, faith and beliefs is the greatest gift of God and it should speak louder than superficial words mumbled in church just before I go out and vilify my neighbour.
Trapped and in Anguish
Each human being is unique, unlike any other. Why should we be cloned in a religious mass of stultifying conformity? A group of people offers only support, mutual friendship and recognition of our feelings. They should not dictate our spirituality. Each of us is responsible for our own souls, making our dealings with our God an intensely personal matter. If you feel trapped and anguished by your faith, more comfortable with hatred than love, instead if peace, tranquility and a sense of purpose, you may be worshipping the wrong god, reading from the wrong book or associating with the wrong people who would seek to control your soul through threats and hell fire than with love and peace.
It could be time to examine what your holy book is saying and ask precisely what relevance it has to you as a child of the 21st century - for your life, aspirations and expectations. Whether men who practise sexism and racism, wage war and promote constant conflicts, men without love who sanction murder in God's name, the ones who would easily kill you without mercy to impose their beliefs and maintain their power, are really the best mediators between you and your God. It is also worth asking whether the concentration on the afterlife is not an excuse to to evade our real responsibilities to each other here on earth. Obviously, we don't have to strive for love, understanding and togetherness now because should we kill, maim and pillage, a vengeful God, who is on our side, is waiting to forgive us when we die!
"The Church is put into the world not to live on past history but to make history," said Graham Kendrick, the hymn writer. I couldn't agree more. But what new history is being made by an obsession with past prophets, past books and past values which increasingly disregard our own achievements, which negate our vibrant and diverse present, which puts religion above us and denies us our unique future?

Each manual is written and photographed from "hands-on" experience gained by a complete teardown and rebuild of the vehicle. The first Haynes manual was written this way 40 years ago, and all the manuals continue to be produced this way, making Haynes the world leader in automotive repair information.
Customer Review: Beginner handbook
I have not done as much work as I might have liked, so I have opened the book relatively little. In what little I have used it, it has been more reassuring than helpful--for instance, the book confirmed that the rear hatch lifter supports come without the entire ball-joint assembly, and that there is little one can do about this. Not really helpful, but reassuring for someone who wonders what is going on.
I consider the book satisfactory for its purposes, and I am glad I own it.
Customer Review: Haynes manuals explain best!
In my opinion, short of an actual manufacturer's shop manual, you can't beat a Haynes book for completeness. And, given that they are written for the non-professional, in some ways they are far superior. Based on complete engine tear-down and rebuild, and covering standard repairs and maintainence, I never buy anything else.
If you are even reasonably handy, like to save money on basic (or even complex) repairs, this is the book for you.

NANCY DREW - STAY TUNED FOR DANGER (WIN 95,98)
Customer Review: Definitely NOT 5 stars
My conscience wouldn't let me leave this item with a 5 star review. My sister and I both agree that this was the worst of all the Nancy Drew Games. This was the only one where we got stuck and had to let the game sit for about 2 years before becoming desperate enough for a mystery game to go back and finish it. It's dry, dull and did I say "Dry and Dull?" Don't let this be the first or only Nancy Drew you buy. In fact, you should only buy this in the 4 or 5 pack like Nancy Drew 75th Anniversary.
The very first episode is difficult to maneuver since you have to change discs, but at least it was cute, set in a high school and a diner. The next couple of games are a little difficult to move around. But, by #3 Message in a Haunted Mansion and #4 Treasure In The Royal Tower they really start getting good. The best are (my order): Nancy Drew - The Secret of Shadow Ranch, Nancy Drew: Secret of the Scarlet Hand, Nancy Drew - Curse of Blackmoor Manor, Nancy Drew: Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, Nancy Drew: Danger on Deception Island, and Nancy Drew: Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon. Though short and without as many fun puzzles and challenges, Nancy Drew: Secret Of the Old Clock and Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek were both very cute. And we still like to go back to Nancy Drew: The Creature of Kapu Cave to go fishing, snorkeling and make necklaces.
I hope you have fun with these and I fervently hope that some other companies would catch on that there is a market for this type of lighthearted and low-violence gaming!!

The Magic School Bus - The Busasaurus
The Magic School Bus - The Busasaurus
A visit to a dinosaur dig turns exciting when the Magic School Bus becomes a time machine that takes Ms. Frizzle's class back 67 million years, to the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. There, they must put aside their prejudices and preconceptions about dinosaurs, as they investigate which are dangerous carnivores, and which are herbivores. By noting their observations in their science journals, the class classifies dinosaurs according to their diets. An encounter with a T-rex concludes the journey. They realize that dinosaurs come in all shapes and sizes, and use the scientific methods of recording data and hypothesizing to reach their conclusions. They also discover how scientists today use evidence such as teeth to tell which dinosaurs ate what. A female paleontologist answers their questions at the end, explaining which part of the journey was fact, and which was speculation. Kids will learn how scientists work, as they enjoy this exciting adventure in time travel. --Elisabeth Keating

Ghosts of Onyx (Halo)
Ghosts of Onyx (Halo)

They're going to need hundreds of willing soldiers, though . . . and one more Spartan to get the job done. The planet Onyx is virtually abandoned and the perfect place to set this new plan in motion. But when the Master Chief destroys Halo, something is triggered deep within Onyx: Ancient Forerunner technology stirs, and fleets of UNSC and Covenant race to claim it to change the course of the Human-Covenant War.But this reawakened and ancient force may have plans of its own. . . Customer Review: Awsome Prequel to Halo 3
This book was done remarkably well, despite the absense of Master Chief. You really get to know the other Spartans better...almost to the point that you just about tear up when they get mortally wounded. It mentions the civil war going on between the Elites and the rest of the Convenant, but still keeps the Elites in the villian spotlight. The ending of the book was definately NOT what I was expecting, but, given the plots of the 3 games, you shouldn't be too suprised. All in all, it's probably the best book in the series.
Customer Review: Halo, Ghosts of Onix
After reading it twice over I realised it had a few to many cross over plots with the other books. It would have been good to be released with the other three box book set however because it wasnt there are constant references back to different plots. It also introduces a few things that arnt in the other books however should have been and reveals that its been written after and not along side the other series. Overall if you can look past unexplained differences between different technologies and times or if you read it without reading the other three then it has a good plot and delivery of material well timed.
Fisher-Price T.M.X. Tickle Me Extreme Cookie Monster
Fisher-Price T.M.X. Tickle Me Extreme Cookie Monster
Tickle your funny bone with this hilarious Cookie Monster toy. Recommended for ages 18 months and older, he falls backwards, then rolls to the right and left while laughing hysterically.
![]() Tickle Cookie Monster's belly and he falls to the floor in laughter. View larger. View side view. |
|
Part of the new Tickle Me Extreme friends, Tickle Me Cookie Monster is every bit as charming and fun as his popular friend, T.M.X. Elmo. When you touch his belly, this plush 11-inch doll falls backwards and giggles as he rocks back and forth. He even gets back up on his own! With googly eyes and soft blue fur, this Cookie Monster doll is cute, huggable, and a great toy for young children. He comes packaged in a cardboard carrying case with a handle at the top and a cutout to poke his ticklish tummy. Cookie Monster performs best on a hard, flat surface and requires six AA batteries (included) to bring him to life.
Laughter Is Contagious
Each T.M.X. friend has its own unique actions. The T.M.X. Cookie Monster features silly gyrations followed by humorous phrases. This motorized doll is so soft, kids can pick it up, snuggle with it, then put it down and watch it wiggle. It only takes two tickles to send Cookie Monster into hysterical laughter and kids soon find themselves giggling along. This doll has an incredible likeness to the actual Sesame Street character. Parents can add to the fun with T.M.X. Elmo or T.M.X. Ernie, sold separately.
Tickle Test
During the tickle test, it became easy to see why the T.M.X. friends are in such demand. When you tickle Cookie Monster's belly, he doubles over in hysterics. The second time he is tickled, he falls over backwards, rolls from left to right, then gets back up again, saying, "That was good." The doll moves best on a hard, flat surface and struggles a little when placed on carpet. But that was the only setback discovered during the hands-on testing process. A discreet on-off switch on his foot allows you to turn the doll off, if you're in need of some quiet time. Overall, T.M.X. Cookie Monster makes a great toy for its target age range. Even adults will crack a smile as this jolly character shakes and rolls with laughter.

Customer Review: Worth it if under $20
I got a super deal on this around Christmas - I think it was only about $13! It was definitely worth $13. At first it made my one year old cry. I think she thought there was something wrong with Cookie. But then she got used to him and she loves him. He made my husband and I laugh like crazy the first time we tried him out, especially when he says at the end "Oh, THAT GOOD ONE!" I agree with others; he is a big battery hog. I haven't changed out the batteries yet, so he can't move around as well right now. But he does still bend over and shake a bit, and his voice is still good. So it doesn't really matter to a one-year-old! I am glad we got it, but might not be as thrilled if he had been over $20 (as he is as of this writing.)
Customer Review: Cookie Monster made us smile!
i gave this toy to my goddaughter who's a year old - at first she was hesitant because of the tumbling action - but the laughing sound and the voice of cookie monster made her smile - and us adult swoon! Soon after the first jitters, she was already playing with it and enjoying it! Her parents and I grew up on Sesame Street and its wonderful to see that it still has a wonderful effect on the present generation.

Customer Review: This is great for #2
I don't have a #2 yet but I am an elementary art teacher and let me tell you that I absolutly love this book. It is done in a fun way that tells both the mom and baby's point of view and gives fun facts that kids can relate to, like you were the size of a toster and what kinds of things the baby is working on at each stage of pregnance. I buy it for all my friends who are expecting, especially if it is # 2 or #3!
Customer Review: Good, if you are mainstream...
... but if you are planning an out of hospital birth or a birth with midwives, it's not quite as peachy. There is an illustration of mom at the doctor's office getting checked out early on, a reference in the text to her seeing the doc when baby drops, and then she rushes off to the hospital to push and push in the final pages. No room for birth center or homebirth, the midwifery model of care or self-care.
There is also a full-page illustration of father dusting off a crib.
I also had a hard time identifying with the mother in the illustrations, who is very white upper-middle class in her dresses, make-up and workout clothing.
Parenting, lifestyle, and birth choices aside, this is definitely a book written by a mother, not a writer, and sometimes the rhymes are a bit forced. The illustrations make up for it in their jolly attitude, but are not caldecott contenders- they are quick and dirty cartoon style pen and ink, colorwash type things, with little art.
However, if you see an OB regularly, have a seperate nursery for baby, and like Martha Stewart, this book might be right on target for you!

A female paleontologist answers their questions at the end, explaining which part of the journey was fact, and which was speculation. Kids will learn how scientists work, as they enjoy this exciting adventure in time travel. --Elisabeth Keating
